It's still in the works but finally have a working prototype. So after much thought, I decided to make my own hardware FM synth desktop module based on the DX7 with some new features and it has been a lot of great fun! I use a Raspberry Pi running Pure Data as the microcomputer inside and a small OLED display to provide visual feedback and display envelopes for the different operators. Sometime in the new year I began looking for a DX200 but just found some of the front panel features a bit limiting after doing some reading so I thought I'd pick up a Volca FM, but then I would only have 3-voice polyphony at a time. But at the end of the day I still love to sit back and use FM for the synths in the my tracks. There has definitely been quite a stir in the industry around analog synthesizers in recent years that has even led me to lust after multiple of those instruments over and over again. While I haven't picked up my own DX/TX model yet, I find it curious that we don't have more dedicated modern hardware FM options (aside from Reface DX/Volca FM). I definitely agree on throwing on some warm saturation to add even more character.

Easy editing of preset voices for storage in any of 100 user memory locations. In Japan in was sold under the EOS brand, simply called EOS DS55. There are three types of sequences: pattern change, key shift or arpeggio. A feedback control is available on the rear panel that can be used for fine adjustment of the overall length of the delay effects.Īn "Auto Performance" function provides a range of 43 sequences that can be used for accompaniment while playing. Through MIDI, a "multi-instrument" mode can be accessed and lets you independently play 8 voices at once. The built in digital delay is a welcome addition: each preset has its own delay settings, on or off, short or long. Voices can be played in "single" mode, layered with "dual" mode or assigned to the lower and upper sections of the DS55 keyboard via the "split" mode. The DS55 comes pre-programmed with 200 voices, but also includes an easy editing system which allows you to modify the sound of the preset in a number of ways, then store the results in any of 100 user memory locations. It effectively repackages a 4op FM synth in an extremely user-friendly interface, acting as a bridge between the Portatone keyboards and the full-featured DX synthesizers such as the Yamaha DX11. The Yamaha DS55 digital synthesizer is one of the last "classic" FM synthesizer, close relative of the YS100 retaining however the typical design language of the 1980s.
